Because I’m a tease, and because I want criticism. The header (part of the note view) will be togglable via a shortcut, and will show in the full screen view. If you keep your list on the side, the header will be under the toolbar. Click to pop a full size view.

Adam,
In my mind the header should look like it is part of the note, not look like a completely separate element that separates the note from the list.
I would be happy to mock some ideas up in Photoshop if you are interested.
Additionally some of the information in the header is duplicated in the list view that you show: note name and note type. Removing the large note type icon, or changing to a smaller icon placed in front of the name (as it is in the list view), or using a > kind < text field would clean the area up by allowing the name / kind and tag fields to both stretch the length of the note window, one on top of the other as they are now.
When you collapse the header is there an option to hide only one line so you can just see the tags ?
At the moment Cmnd-Shift-A autonames a note using the first line of the note. Would this feature remain, or would you have to fill in the name field in the (collapsable) header, or would it fill both areas ?
Are tags still shown in the list window as well as the header ?
In previous posts you wrote about using smart folders to filter tags. How does this work ? Is there another window, or area of the main window in which these smart folders sit (a third pane) ?
Always happy to see some new ideas, absolutely.
Though, the reason it doesn’t look like part of the note at the moment is because of the new archive note types for which that doesn’t make sense (they usually do not have a white background at the top). I could easily change the style of the header based on the note type such that only archive notes get that style of header and text notes get a white header with no barrier to the text note. That wouldn’t be very hard at all at this point. I would just question changing the visual style so dramatically with a note change.
The icon is there so you know if it’s a PDF or Web note, and at smaller sizes that isn’t very legible, so I think it best for archive notes to be that size, FWIW. Also, I’m pondering enabling it for drag-and-drop to copy the note out somewhere in its native format.
When the header is toggled, it disappears completely. I’d rather not have a staged retreat on the header, showing one or two lines, etc.. I wouldn’t be opposed to adding some preferences on what to include in the header when it’s open. And no matter what is included, the list shows what you want it to show; the limited selection in the screenshot is merely what I was using during the test.
The sorting tags list isn’t done yet, but in the end there will be a side area kind of like Mail, only it will be a tags list. Picking a tag will filter to that tag. Hiding the tags area or deselecting tags would show all notes.
The pressing need for a header of some kind is twofold: full-screen mode and single note windows. These are outside of the context of the main window and it’s useful to have some information about the note in with that note.
Autoname is unchanged; the name of the note in the header is the same data that’s in the info panel and table.
